"Fruits Basket" is a shoujo manga series written and illustrated by Natsuki Takaya. The story revolves around a young girl named Tohru Honda, who after a family tragedy, finds herself living in a tent in the woods. She is discovered by her classmate Yuki Sohma and his cousin Shigure Sohma, who invite her to live with them in their house. Tohru soon learns that the Sohma family has a curse: thirteen members of the family are possessed by the spirits of the Chinese Zodiac, and whenever they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex, they transform into their respective animal form.
Tohru meets several members of the Sohma family, including Kyo, who is possessed by the spirit of the cat, an animal excluded from the Chinese Zodiac. Kyo is seen as an outcast by the other members of the family and has a rivalry with Yuki. Despite the curse, Tohru befriends the Sohmas and helps them confront their family issues and emotional traumas.
As the story progresses, Tohru becomes close with Kyo, Yuki, and other members of the family, including the older Sohma cousin Hatori, who has a tragic backstory involving his ex-girlfriend Kana. Tohru's presence in their lives brings healing and changes, but also confronts the Sohmas with their deepest fears and secrets.
Throughout the series, Tohru learns more about the Sohma family's curse and how it has affected each member in different ways. She also develops romantic feelings for Kyo, but their relationship is complicated by the curse and Kyo's own inner struggles.
As the story nears its conclusion, Tohru discovers the truth about the origin of the Sohma curse and sets out to break it, risking her own life in the process. The series ends on a bittersweet note, with Tohru bringing hope and healing to the Sohma family, but also accepting that some wounds cannot be fully healed.
